The technological knowledge base continues to expand with technology educators increasingly required to deliver a broad range of contemporary technological experiences across both the primary and secondary school curriculum. Science and Technology, Design and Technology, and expanding programs in VET are but a few examples. Unfortunately as part of everyday language, particularly the language of politicians and the mass media, the term 'technology' is more often than not used to describe issues associated with I.T. (Information Technology) and not much else. Indeed NSW students will now be required to have their I.T. skills measured.
All this has significant implications for the restricted perception of technology education in the wider community. ACET 2002 aims to explore the variety and significance that a comprehensive technology curriculum can offer to the knowledge, skills and competency levels of all young people in a modern society.
In particular the conference aims to develop an inclusive rationale for technology education in the school curriculum that could be used to convince politicians, industry leaders and the wider community that a study of the material world, and the artifacts produced to support society is as important to the development of young people as a knowledge of information technology.
About ACET
The Australian Council for Education Through Technology is a council of affiliated technology organisations. It exists to promote and improve the quality of technology education provided in Australia. ACET is the National Professional Association for technology educators representing members from all sectors of education including pre-school, primary schools, secondary schools, senior colleges, and the tertiary education sector through universities and TAFE It also encourages membership from industry. It represents all educators with an interest in technology education. Membership is drawn from the existing disciplines of industrial arts, manual arts, computing, design, home economics, textiles, media, technical studies and agriculture. ACET is an affiliate of the International Technology Educators' Association and a member of the Technology Education Federation of Australia.
ACET Activities
The Council fosters technology education through activities such as its national conference, national technology educators' awards, journals, newsletters and national projects such as the microfiche library, interactive database, and the resources survey. ACET participates in projects of national significance and various state projects through its affiliates. The National Executive of ACET takes up issues at Federal level and co-ordinates and supports the activities of its affiliated organisations. At all levels ACET activities are designed to improve the quality of technology education by providing input to curriculum development groups concerned with education. ACET also contributes to the professional development of teachers and provides up to date information and resources. Members are encouraged and prepared to take up leadership roles nationally as well as within their state and local area systems.
