| National Education Forum Report - Canberra 21 October 2000 |
Tim Grace attended the October meeting on behalf of ACET membership. Details of the next meeting (early 2001) were not finalised.
Elections for chair (Vince Geiger), secretary (Joan Warhurst), treasurer (Jan Althorpe), and committee (Christine Reid) were conducted and a new secretariat was nominated (Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers) and now constitutes the NEF management committee.
The morning’s agenda related to School Funding
issues and private/public sector perspectives. Representatives from the
Australian Labor Party, the Australian Education Union, the Independent
Teachers Union, and DETYA presented papers. In overall terms the debate
revolves around differing interpretations of a “needs” based policy. The
concept of “need” is open to interpretation from both economic and social
understandings.
A round table information-sharing session provides Professional Associations
with an opportunity to table issues and promotes activities. Points made
on ACET’s behalf related to:
· DETYA’s investigation into Technology Education
· Teacher Training and supply shortages
· OH&S issues and the workshop
· The influence of Information & Communication Technologies
· International Directions - ICTE
A common theme was the impact of professional certification. Details of the “Standards of Professional Practice” investigation being undertaken can be accessed via the web at: http://www.austcolled.com.au
A second point of interest was “Teacher Development for the Integration of ICT into Classroom Practice”. This investigation is being undertaken for DETYA and is likely to grow in importance over the next few years. Details are available on the web at: http://www.teacherpd.org and a public e-mail discussion list can be joined by sending a blank e-mail to join-MTPDICT-discussion@edna.edu.au
