Mission

QSOSE is an organisation that provides support to teachers of the Key Learning Area of Studies of Society and Environment in Queensland.

The QSOSE Consortium seeks to

maintain a professional organisation consisting of members representative of employing authorities, professional associations and universities to support the KLA of SOSE;
provide a professional development role as a source of information for teachers on the availability of professional development support for SOSE throughout Queensland;
encourage and promote dialogue at the State level about teaching and learning in SOSE, and encourage debate and critical appraisal of educational initiatives in Queensland in this KLA.

Values and Beliefs of the Consortium

The provision of professional development support for teachers in the area of SOSE in Queensland builds on high levels of co-operation between consortium members. Through these partnerships, ensuring access to professional development support and information for all teachers - in early childhood, primary, secondary and special education sectors - in rural and remote areas as well as urban areas - will be a priority.

Goals and Strategies

Three major areas to strengthen have been identified by the consortium:

professional development pathways - with a major commitment to professional support to systems/schools with respect to the implementation of the Years 1-10 SOSE syllabus;
networking;
lobbying.

There are currently fifteen organisations represented by the members of QSOSE Consortium Inc.

QSOSE Inc received some money in 1999 from the Queensland Discovering Democracy grant money to prepare two booklets that link the Discovering Democracy materials to the new SOSE curriculum in Queensland. One booklet was prepared for Years 4-7 and the other for Years 8-10. Each booklet contains a matrix that enables quick reference to be made from the Discovering Democracy Units to the Queensland SOSE core learning outcomes and to topics that are currently taught in Queensland schools. It also contains outlines of two workshops that could be conducted with a school staff. The booklets should provide a firm basis for teachers to prepare their own modules of work that adapt the Discovering Democracy Units to the Queensland context.
