| Computer tools in the Early Childhood classroom: IT for real purposes |
| by Jenny Masters |
|
While current educational theory indicates that we should be using computers to support children's learning with authentic tasks, computer use in early childhood classrooms is often restricted to out-of-context "edutainment". This may be because teachers find it difficult to introduce computer tools to young children, especially when the tools they have available are designed for business applications, not education and certainly not for the early childhood years! This presentation will demonstrate ways in which computer tools such as databases and spreadsheets can be applied to early learning tasks. It will also show how standard computer tools such as Microsoft Office can be customised to cater for younger learners.
