The
venue for the QSITE "Warming to Information Technology"
Conference is the North Ward Campus of Townsville
Grammar School. Townsville
Grammar School is a co-educational, non-denominational day and boarding
school with an enrolment of over 1000 students. Its secondary school
is the oldest in North Queensland, having commenced operations in
1888. The secondary school remains on its original site of 32 hectares
in the seaside suburb of North Ward, sitting in the shadow of Castle
Hill and enjoying cooling breezes off Cleveland Bay. In recent years,
Townsville Grammar School has experienced significant growth with
the acquisition of a second campus at Annandale for its Junior School
(preschool to Year 7) and the construction of a $3.4 million boarding
house at North Ward, which is arguably Australia's finest such facility.
Townsville
Grammar School has a wide-area network linking a total of over 250
computers and all buildings on its two campuses. The school has both
IBM-compatible and Apple Macintosh computers and the use of these
is integrated across the two platforms. The Senior School provides
for several models in the use of IT in the curriculum with the computers
for student use located in clusters in classrooms, in a number of
laboratories and in the library/resource centre. A set of Apple Macintosh
G3 Powerbooks and Apple iBooks is also available for use. The IBM-compatible
computers are 350 MHz (or above) Windows NT 4 workstations and the
Apple Macintosh computers are 350 MHz (or above) iMacs using Mac OS
9. Novell networking software integrates the various curriculum and
administrative functions. Townsville Grammar School has a 128K ISDN
link to the Internet, and its own mail server and webserver, both
running on Novell servers. Microsoft Office 97 (or Office 98 on the
Apple Macintosh computers) is the main application software used and
both Netscape 4.7 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 are available
on all computers for internet access.
