Starting out right: a guide to promoting children's reading success
M. Susan Burns, Peg Griffin, and Catherine Snow (Eds.), National Research Council (1999)

Recently we reviewed the report Preventing Reading Disabilities in Young Children: Starting Out Right is a follow-up publication which takes the recommendations made in the report and provides advice to teachers and parents about how these recommendations might be put into action. Key sections include:

  • Promoting Children’s Reading Success
  • Growing Up to Read
  • Becoming Real Readers Preventing Reading Difficulties

The book provides information about key aspects of literacy and the expectations we have of young children. The book has a very strong organisational pattern which makes it easy to access at the reader’s particular point of interest. Ito is easily read with key messages highlighted by the page layout.

Starting Out Right also offers advice about the activities, books, CD-ROMs and internet resources which parents and teachers might use to give children specific literacy experiences.

The book would be very useful to those teaching in the early childhood years and to those who conduct parent support groups.

Publisher: National Academy Press.
