Guided reading: good first teaching for all children
Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell

Gay Su Pinnell is probably best known for her associations with Reading Recovery. Knowledge of this association will provide insights into the content of the book. The book reproduces many of the policy statements of the New Zealand Department of Education. It offers teachers useful advice on how to develop and organise a balanced literacy program. In addition, it provides a range of blackline master material which many teachers will find useful.

One of the selling features of the books is that it contains a list of 'levelled books'. While many teachers will find this concept appealing, it should be remembered that the concept of book levelling is gross and somewhat naïve. Such a list should be regarded with caution.

Publisher: Heinemann.
