Council for Exceptional Children
‘The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted. CEC advocates for appropriate governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides continual professional development, advocates for newly and historically underserved individuals with exceptionalities, and helps professionals obtain conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice.’
The site, among its many resources provides a convenient link to the ERIC Clearinghouse on Disabilities and Gifted Education, U.S department of Education, and Links to other Online Resources.

CSIE: Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education
CSIE is the Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education. It is a national centre, a British independent educational charity funded mainly by donations from trusts and foundations. It gives information and advice about inclusive education and related issues. The Centre, which was set up in 1982, is fully committed to working towards an end to segregated education. Inclusion means all. This commitment is based on human rights principles.

IDEAPractices
The IDEA Partnerships are four national projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) to deliver a common message about the landmark 1997 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The IDEA Partnerships, working together for five years, inform professionals, families and the public about IDEA '97 and strategies to improve educational results for children and youth with disabilities.

John F. Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development
The Kennedy Center's aims are:

  • to prevent and solve developmental problems
  • to enable persons with developmental disabilities to lead fuller lives in their communities

Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA)

This site, sponsored by the University of Michigan is an outstanding source for finding information on the reading process and teaching reading at the early stages of development.
See ‘New Findings’. Controversial issues are not avoided.
Dip into the ‘Archive’ for research on the many issues involved in this area.

DIBELS
The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy development. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills.

International Reading Association
This is the premier website for those involved in teaching literacy. A great number of journals and various publications, including Reading Online originate from this organization. ‘Literacy Connections’ will provide you with numerous other sites that may meet your specific need.

MyRead: Strategies for teaching reading in the middle years
MyRead supports teachers of underperforming students in the middle years (Years 4 – 9).

Reading Online
Reading Online (ROL) is a peer-reviewed journal of the International Reading Association. For those who are particularly interested in multiliteracies and the new literacies, this site is for you.

UTCRL: University of Texas Center for Reading and Language Arts
The University of Texas Center for Reading and Language Arts (UTCRLA) has been supporting the Texas Reading Initiative since 1996. Begun with Academics 2000 funds provided by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), the Center enjoys the support of the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin. Under the direction of Dr. Sharon Vaughn, the Center’s original mission was to enhance the knowledge, skills, and practices of Texas educators in implementing the state curriculum standards — the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) — in reading and language arts.

WiLEARNS
Wisconsin LEARNS (Literacy Education and Reading Network Source) is a complete literacy resource to support teachers and families in teaching the process of reading.

Curriculum Exchange
This site developed by Education Queensland provides teachers with many opportunities to access material relevant to classroom use. See in particular the TIPS database and the Literacy and SOSE pages.
The TIPS database will require that you get a password from Education Queensland before you can access it.
The Hot Topics/Quicklinks that can be accessed through this site provide a format inform users of a wealth of materials on a selected topic.

42Explore
Don't start with a search engine, start with 42explore! When you're learning something new, it's nice to have more than one resource to explore. This web project provides "four to explore" for each topic. On each page you'll find definitions, activities, 4 good starting points, and many more links and resources for the thematic topic.

EdNA (Education Network Australia On line
This site provides teachers with a vast network of resources including access to university sites, information on commonwealth and state government initiatives, and a myriad of projects and resources useful for the practising teacher. For example, use the ‘Browse’ facility to access School Education/Curriculum Resources.

Teaching Ideas for Primary Teachers
This site developed in Great Britain by a young teacher in training provides great ideas and lessons in the various curriculum areas.
