This Benchmarks Program was designed to enhance internal monitoring processes in the small schools of the TADPOLES cluster in the Emerald District. The Program addresses a number of priorities that were identified by the principals involved:

The need to have valid internal monitoring of student progress to supplement external results ( Year 2 Net, Years 3/5/7 tests). The validity of trends over succeeding years is reduced with small cohorts eg. One or two students.

The provision of standardised data to provide parents with information about their children are progressing in comparison with developmental criteria.

The provision of standardised data to provide consistency in internal monitoring across small schools and maintain standards in student outcomes. Given the high level of staff turnover in small schools this will assist incoming staff in maintaining the delivery of a quality curriculum program. It will also assist in the effective use of learning support time and provide usual data when applying for other student support services.

Benchmarks

Tests and screening instruments were selected to provide literacy and numeracy benchmarks. The criteria for the selection was:

Group rather than individual administration

Multiple forms of the test

Scoring that was inclusive of a multiage classroom

TORCH (Test of Reading Comprehension)

Waddington Spelling Tests A & B

South Australian Spelling Test

Year 2 Net Moderation (Writing)

National Writing Benchmarks (Years 3-7)

When student reach upper limit of Waddington Test scoring (11years +) use South Australian Spelling Test and TORCH (test of reading comprehension).

Writing Moderation for Years 1-3 conducted within cluster moderation for Diagnostic Net

Writing Moderation for Years 4-7 conducted at Term 3 TADPOLES meeting.

An Assessment and Support Database is available to track Benchmark results over a number of years and provide details of student support and program modification.
