What is DECA?

The Design in Education Council Australia was established in 1984 as a national organisation of design educators, teachers, design professionals and individuals, groups and institutions interested in the role of design in education.

Objectives of DECA are to:

  • encourage and promote all facets of design in education
  • provide a national focus for all such activity
  • provide a national forum for the exchange of ideas for all people working in Australia on aspects of design in education
  • develop relationships with other national and international groups which promote similar aims

DECA is not just concerned with design education, but with developing an understanding of the design process as a general education strategy, and education through design activity.

DECA is one of the five national associations which constitute the Technology Education Federation of Australia (TEFA) and is a member association of the National Affiliation of Arts Educators (NAAE). DECA has also developed a close relationship with the Australian Academy of Design (AAD).
