Following
from the successful inaugural VETNETwork National Conference held in
Adelaide in 1998, the 2000 event promises to be the seminal event
covering the vocational education and training in schools sector.
Planned
highlights of the forthcoming conference include a series of keynote
addresses including David Eldridge, Chair of the Prime Minister’s
Task Force on Youth, Dr Ken Boston, Director General of Education in
NSW, Brenda Garrard-Forster from Ericsson, Professor Richard Teese,
University of Melbourne, John Spierings from Dusseldorp Skills
Forum, and Moira Scollay, CEO of ANTA.
A
series of interactive and focused workshops on new developments
shaping VET in Schools delivery, new models for running VET, an
update on career and work education and success stories where
industry and education are working successfully together will be
central to the conference. At the heart of these will be
practitioners who will share their experiences and give advice on
how to implement VET programs.
The
1998 conference was valued for the sense of camaraderie and VET
community “belonging” that it generated, as teachers from across
Australia seized the opportunity to meet and share experiences, many
for the first time. The 2000 conference will allow a stock-take
amongst these VET practitioners, while providing a significant
opportunity for those new to the field to establish networks.
This
time, the place of school-based New Apprenticeships will be
explored, and the experiences of those breaking new ground will be
shared.
The
program is designed to include the interests of post-compulsory
educators as well, an important feature given that VETNETwork’s
origins are to be found in the original National Post Compulsory
Education and Training Association.
The
conference is being jointly hosted by the Career Education
Association of Victoria and the detailed operational planning of the
conference is being undertaken by a team of VET and Career teachers
from the CEAV. The opportunity to enjoy the warmth and hospitality
of Melbourne in the spring will be taken care of through an
extensive leisure and recreation program being put together by this
team.
